(его величество имеет в своем правительстве только низкокаблучников; to govern — править, управлять).
powerful ['paʋəfʋl], ancient ['eɪnʃ(ə)nt], government [‘ɡʌvə(n)mənt]
He told me that, whatever his country seemed like to someone from another country, it suffered from two evils. There was a violent faction at home and there was the danger of an invasion by a most powerful enemy. He also told me that there had been two parties in the Empire for more than six years now. These were called Tramecksan and Slamecksan, after the high and low heels on their shoes. It was said that although the High-Heels agreed with the country's ancient laws, His Majesty had only Low-Heels in his government.
The hatred between these two parties was so strong (ненависть между этими двумя партиями столь сильна = велика) that they wouldn't eat or drink together (что они не станут ни есть, ни пить вместе = за одним столом; wouldn't = would not). Nor would they talk to each other (и не станут /даже/ говорить друг с другом; nor — также не). The Tramecksan, or High-Heels, were more numerous (тремексены, или Высокие Каблуки, более многочисленны), but the Low-Heels had the real power (но реальная власть принадлежит Низким Каблукам). He told me that His Highness the Prince (он рассказал мне, что его высочество принц), the heir to the crown (наследник короны = престола), had a leaning towards the High-Heels (имеет /некоторое/ расположение к Высоким Каблукам; to lean — наклонять/ся/; склоняться; leaning — склонность; расположение, симпатия). At least they discovered (по крайней мере, было замечено: «они обнаружили»; to cover — накрывать, закрывать; to discover — обнаруживать, раскрывать, узнавать) that one of his heels was higher than the other (что один каблук у него выше другого), making him hobble when he walked (что заставляет его прихрамывать при ходьбе; to make — делать, создавать; быть причиной, вызвать; заставлять, побуждать).
