After they had been silent for a while, one of their speakers, Porcupine, arose, and said, "Friends, let me say a word or two to answer your question. Your counsel is very good for yourselves, for you have plenty of warm fur, even for the most severe cold, but look down upon these little insects. They have no fur to warm themselves in winter; and how can small insects and other small animals obtain provisions if you ask for severe cold in winter? Therefore I say this, don't ask for the greatest cold." Then he stopped speaking and sat down.
Then Grizzly Bear arose, and said (затем поднялся Гризли и сказал), "We will not pay any attention to what Porcupine says (мы не /станем/ обращать внимание на /то/, что говорит Дикобраз; to pay attention to — обращать внимание на кого-либо, что-либо) for all the large animals agree (так как все большие звери согласны)." Therefore he turned his head toward the large animals (поэтому он повернул свою голову в сторону больших зверей), and said, "Did you agree when we asked for the severest cold on earth (вы согласились, когда мы просили жесточайших холодов на земле)?" and all the large animals replied (и все большие животные ответили), "We all consented (мы все согласны). We do not care for what Porcupine has said (нас не заботит то = нам безразлично, что сказал Дикобраз)."

Then the same speaker arose again (тогда тот же самый оратор поднялся вновь), and said, "Now, listen once more (ну, так послушайте еще раз)! I will ask you just one question (я задам вам всего один вопрос)." Thus spoke Porcupine (так говорил Дикобраз): "How will you obtain plants to eat (как вы /сможете/ добывать растения, чтобы есть) if you ask for very severe cold (если вы попросите очень жестокого холода)? And if it is so cold (и если /будет/ так холодно), the roots of all the wild berries will be withered and frozen (корни всех диких ягод ослабеют и замерзнут;
