Indians [`IndIqnz], honest [`OnIst], great [greIt], enemy [`enImI], among [q`mAN]

Now these Indians, who were the honestest fellows in all the world, and never did harm to any one save their enemies, were in a sorry pickle. For it is a bad thing to have nothing but water to drink, but to want that is to be mightily dry. And the great Glooskap, who knew all that was passing in the hearts of men and beasts, took note of this, and when he willed it he was among them; for he ever came as the wind comes, and no man wist how.

And just before he came (и как раз перед тем, как он пришел) all of these good fellows had resolved in council (все эти добрые малые /уже/ решили на совете) that they would send the boldest man among them to certain death (что они отправят наихрабрейшего человека среди них на верную смерть), even to the village (даже в деревню) which built the dam (которая выстроила плотину; to build) that kept the water (что сдерживала воду; to keep) which filled the brook (которая наполняла реку) that quenched their thirst (утолявшую их жажду: «которая утоляла их жажду), whenever it was not empty (тогда, когда она не была пустой = пересохшей). And when there he was (и когда он = храбрец нашелся: «и когда там он был») either to obtain that (либо чтобы добиться того; to obtain — добиваться, достигать /чего-либо/) they should cut the dam (чтобы они разрыли/раскопали запруду), or do something desperate (либо сделать что-нибудь отчаянное), and to this intent he should go armed (и для этого: «и для этой цели» ему нужно пойти вооруженным; intent — намерение, цель), and sing his death-song as he went (и петь свою песнь смерти в пути: «когда он шел»). And they were all agog (и все они были взбудоражены/в нетерпении; to be all agog — сгорать от нетерпения, быть в возбужденном состоянии).
