She felt that she was dozing off (она чувствовала, что засыпает; to doze — дремать, клевать носом, находиться в полусонном состоянии), and had just begun to dream that she was walking hand in hand with Dinah, and saying to her very earnestly (и ей как раз начал сниться сон, что она идет под ручку с Диной и очень серьезно ей говорит), 'Now, Dinah, tell me the truth (ну же, Дина, скажи мне правду = признайся): did you ever eat a bat (ты когда-нибудь ела летучую мышь)?' when suddenly, thump! thump! down she came upon a heap of sticks and dry leaves (как вдруг, бух! бац! она приземлилась на кучу прутьев и сухих листьев; thump — тяжелый удар /кулаком, дубинкой/; глухой звук /от удара/), and the fall was over (и падение закончилось).
