wore [wL], muslin ['mAzlIn], pagoda [pq'gqudq]
That picture in a flower-painted frame now adorned the table of her little flat. It showed Mrs. Harris of thirty years ago, a tiny, thin-looking girl whose plain features were enhanced by the freshness of youth. Her hair was short-bobbed, the fashion of the day, and she wore a white muslin wedding dress tiered somewhat in the manner of a Chinese pagoda. In her posture there was already some hint of the courage and independence she was to display later when she became widowed.
The expression on her face was one of pride in the man she had captured (выражение ее лица было выражением гордости за мужчину, которого она завоевала; to capture — захватывать силой; брать в плен; завладеть, захватить, увлечь; завоевать /приз, голоса избирателей и т. п./) and who stood beside her (и который стоял рядом с ней), a nice-looking boy somewhat on the short side (привлекательный парень довольно невысокого роста), wearing a dark suit (одетый в темный костюм) and his hair carefully plastered down (а его волосы /были/ тщательно напомажены и приглажены; to plaster — штукатурить; мазать, намазывать; покрывать слоем /чего-л./). As was becoming to his new status (как /и/ подобало/соответствовало его новому /гражданскому/ состоянию), he looked terrified (он выглядел напуганным). And thereafter nobody had ever again troubled to reproduce Mrs. Harris (и после этого никто никогда больше не беспокоился = не брал на себя труд запечатлеть миссис Харрис), nor had she so much as thought about it (и ей даже не приходила в голову мысль об этом).
