The Wicked Witch then made the axe slip and cut off my head (Злая Ведьма заставила мой топор выскользнуть и отрубить мою голову), and at first I thought that was the end of me (и поначалу я подумал, что настал мой конец). But the tinsmith happened to come along (но, случилось так, что жестянщик проходил мимо = как раз шел мимо; to happen — случаться, происходить; оказываться /случайно/), and he made me a new head out of tin (и он сделал мне новую голову из железа).
"I thought I had beaten the Wicked Witch then (тогда мне казалось, что я победил Злую Ведьму; to beat — бить, ударять; побить, победить), and I worked harder than ever (и я работал упорнее, чем когда-либо); but I little knew how cruel my enemy could be (мало же я знал, каким жестоким может быть мой враг).
