The people greeted Dorothy kindly, and invited her to supper and to pass the night with them; for this was the home of one of the richest Munchkins in the land, and his friends were gathered with him to celebrate their freedom from the bondage of the Wicked Witch.
Dorothy ate a hearty supper (Дороти съела обильный ужин; hearty — сердечный, искренний; обильный /о пище/) and was waited upon by the rich Munchkin himself (и ей прислуживал сам богатый Манчкин; to wait — ждать, выжидать; прислуживать, обслуживать /за столом и т. п./), whose name was Boq (которого звали Бок). "Why (почему /это/)?" asked the girl.
"Because you wear silver shoes (потому что ты носишь серебряные башмаки) and have killed the Wicked Witch (и убила Злую Ведьму). Besides, you have white in your frock (кроме того, у тебя на платье есть белый цвет), and only witches and sorceresses wear white (а только ведьмы и волшебницы носят белое)."
"My dress is blue and white checked (мое платье в голубую и белую клетку)," said Dorothy, smoothing out the wrinkles in it (сказала Дороти, разглаживая складки на нем; to smooth — приглаживать, разглаживать).
"It is kind of you to wear that (мило с твоей стороны носить /это платье/; kind — добрый; любезный)," said Boq. "Blue is the color of the Munchkins (голубой — это /любимый/ цвет Манчкинов), and white is the witch color (а белый — это /любимый/ цвет ведьм).
