"Then come, and we will play a game together, and with that I will prove you."
"It is well! But what game shall we play, for here we have nothing?"
Near them stood a broken pine-tree, with one great arm from its twisted body. And looking at it, the false friend said:
"I see nothing but to play the gallo race; and because we have no horses we will ride this arm of the pine-tree—first I will ride, and then you."

But the false friend bewitched the pine (но неверный друг заколдовал сосну), and suddenly it grew in a moment to the very sky (и внезапно она выросла за мгновение до самого неба; in a moment — мгновенно, за одну минуту), carrying Kahp-too-óo-yoo (унося /с собой/ Кахп-ту-ó-йу).

So he climbed the pine-tree, and sat astride the limb as upon a horse, and rode, reaching over to the ground as if to pick up the chicken.

"We do this to one another (мы делаем это друг для друга)," taunted the false friend (передразнил лживый друг; to taunt — насмехаться, говорить колкости; дразнить), as the tree shot up (в то время, когда дерево взметнулось вверх; to shoot — стрелять; /зд./ внезапно появиться, пронестись, промелькнуть, промчаться); and taking the wood (и, забрав дрова), and the deer which Kahp-too-óo-yoo had killed (и оленя, которого Кахп-ту-ó-йу убил), he went to the village (он отправился в деревню). There the sisters met him, and asked (там сестры встретили его и спросили; to meet):
"Where is our brother (где наш брат)?"
"Truly I know not (право /же/, я не знаю), for he went northwest and I southwest (потому как он ушел на северо-запад, а я — на юго-запад); and though I waited long at the meeting-place (и хотя я ждал долго в условленном месте: «месте встречи»), he did not come (он не пришел).
