Московский государственный университет геодезии и картографии (МИИГАиК) берет свое начало в день 14 мая 1779 г.(25 мая по новому стилю), когда было открыто Константиновское землемерное училище. Хотя в русском языке широко распространенные сегодня термины «геодезист» и «картограф» появились относительно недавно (соответственно в начале ХУ111 и в начале Х1Х вв.), потребность в результатах их труда существовала много ранее.

Our University is one the oldest institutions of higher education in the field of geodesy and cartography. In spite of its age our University is in the permanent process of development and adaptation to the demands of modern society.
The principal objectives of Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography are the following ones:
– to train specialists of high qualification, to have fundamental theoretical knowledge, practical skills in their specialty and be well informed of the most recent science and technology achievements;
– to carry out, together with training, fundamental research and applied scientific studies, to participate in working out and developing special purpose international projects of Russian and international organizations;
– to provide researchers, instructors and specialists with postgraduate training as well as additional retraining and courses for improving qualification.
The University has entered the new century with a highly creative potential of the staff and a rich scientific base, actively using in the educational process the newest technological achievements in the field of geodesy, cartography, photogrammetry, remote sensing and cadastre.
Russian higher education is notable for its authority as one of the best engineering schools. HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY
Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography (MIIGAiK) was established in 1779 and it is the center of higher geodetic education in Russia and the largest educational institution of this type in Europe .
Thousands of the University graduates are taking part in the exploration of the territory and natural resources of Russia , in designing its maps, in constructing its cities, roads and industrial enterprises.
